During the same year that Miles Davis and John Coltrane debuted at the Village Vanguard with their newly constituted small ensembles, in early 1966 Thad Jones and Mel Lewis made an important statement by creating a modern big band. During a time of social distress in the mid 1960s, the ensemble also made a social statement due to its diverse mix of races, ages and religions.
